Workshop – Jennie Rayment

Back from Birmingham – wonderful exhibition and many inspiring quilts from others from around the world. Some very simple and minimalist, some intensely complex and full of technical skill. Two excellent classes – one with Jennie Rayment on understanding folds and pleats – intend to practise asap as otherwise the learning leaves you immediately. One on beautiful threads by Herma who markets and teaches about Wonderfil a yarn designed by a Canadian Andrew and made in China. A palate of both rich and strong colours and more muted minimalist almost Scandinavian neutrals. Lovely to work with and very strong – also economical. Festival of Quilts

Rather out of touch as had virtually no internet for about 8 weeks courtesy of BT. I have been preparing for the ‘Festival of Quilts‘ at Birmingham – and going up this weekend – forgotten how long it takes to actually plan and finish a quilt from scratch when you are not working from a pattern. I included some of the animal prints from ‘The Cabinet of Beasts’ – spent quite a lot of time trying to decide on how to unify the the pictures – the title was ‘Passion in Piecing.’ I wanted to use some of my passions – i.e. animals, birds and the natural world as well as colour and print. Later I will put some more of the pictures up. On the next line I was experimenting with my photo stencils of photographs of succulents which grew along the road side on the Camino de Santiago and some photographs of illustrations from a book of birds. Also old textiles and chair back covers and curtains – this was not the finished version …and although I submitted it to Birmingham there is still much to...
